In this article we are going to help you with How to find your niche for your blog or website. In the guide How to start a blog we talked about niches briefly, this will be a more in-depth guide on finding the perfect niche.

How to Pronounce Niche?

There is come debate on the internet if the word Niche is pronounced “Neesh” or “nich”. Most people pronounce the word as “nich” and you find that when most people talk about a niche, they will pronounce it as “nich”.

What does Niche Mean?

The definition of a Niche is a specialized area for a specific market, product, or service. An example would be a website in the Travel Niche could share or sell vacations. There is a lot to consider when selecting a niche when starting out.

I would recommend starting out in how to find your niche you need to stay fairly broad in your Niche selection. Using the travel example above, I would stay fairly broad in travel and not build the site or pick a niche that is super focused.

Staying with Travel will allow you to create in that category about many topics. Picking a micro niche like finding amazing travel deals might limit your content or audience to a much smaller group. This will limit the number of visitors that could come to your site.

There is more on this topic further down in the guide.

How to Find Your Niche?

The most challenging part anyone has in how to find your niche when starting is finding that perfect Niche to talk about on their website or when looking for a product. This is where research comes in around that niche and if it is profitable.

Most people fail because they selected an idea that has little to no search traffic. Keyword research is paramount for getting visitors to your website regularly. Not that you can’t get traffic for other sources like marketing or ads but search engine traffic is a free source.

That is why people puts so much effort in getting in to the top 10 for searched terms. They want that organic traffic coming to their website. I want you to think about how are people going to find my website?

How to Research a Niche

Using the Travel Category as an example, we are going to look in to some ways to determine if it is a profitable Niche. We search just the word travel and found over 368,000 times a month in google.

Google has a free tool called google keyword planner to help you with finding ideas that are searched for on a monthly basis. Google trends is also an excellent source for ideas.

Ok we now know that travel is an excellent area but there is one problem, there is ALOT of competition for that keyword. What I would do is find something a little easier. Keyword competition will be hard for a new website to compete against. You will go against large websites that have been established for years.

The website in the number 1 spot is expedia.com, extremely hard to rank against starting out. However, when you look at long tail keywords, you find one that is significantly easier to rank for in the beginning “where travel in December”

Long tail keywords are phrases that people search for when looking up topics.

Looking at where travel in December, that phrase gets 1900 visitors a month in traffic or why is travel important for 720 visitors a month. Both are topics are in the category travel but will be vastly easier for a new site to compete IF the content is better than the other websites.

Great content is so important for a website and why selecting the right niche is critical for ensuring the longevity of any website.

Recommendations and Conclusion

Great content will bring visitors to your website. Finding a niche is only one step in the process, and it is ok to make mistakes. Most people when starting an online business or website fail in the beginning.

The lessons learned from failing will only strengthen your brand and presence.
